Each year,
SMU
Dedman
School
of Law awards several scholarships to outstanding Chinese law students who plan to pursue an LL.M. degree at their institution. These scholarships provide full tuition for one year and an $8,000 living stipend. The scholarships were established through the generosity of one of their LL.M. alumni, Dr. Helmut Sohmen, Chairman of World-Wide Shipping Agency, Ltd. in
Hong Kong
.
This year, Dean Attanasio plans to be in
Beijing
, and he would like to interview prospective candidates for the Sohmen Scholarships. he would be particularly interested in meeting those students whom being outstanding candidates for this program.
Sohmen Scholars are selected on the basis of several criteria, including demonstrated academic performance, facility in the English language, and commitment to contributing to the growth of the rule of law in
China
. Sohmen scholars are required to return to
China
within seven months of graduation and maintain
China
as their principal residence for two years following graduation. Scholars who fail to meet these requirements will be expected to requirements will be expected to repay the entire amount of the scholarship and living stipend with interest.
