The Herbert Smith Scholarship

A Scholarship to Qualify as a hong kong or English lawyer

The Scholarship

 

Herbert Smith wishes to award a scholarship to an outstanding law student to qualify as a Hong Kong or English Lawyer.  The student will first study the Graduate Diploma in Law (“GDL”) at a recognised institution in England (http://www.lawcabs.ac.uk/).  Upon satisfactory completion of the GDL the student will be sponsored to study the Professional Certificate of Law (“PCLL”) at The University of Hong Kong, The City University of Hong Kong or The Chinese University of Hong Kong or the (“Legal Practice Course”) LPC in the UK .  After passing the PCLL/LPC the student will commence a two-year training contract at Herbert Smith Hong Kong or Herbert Smith London (September 2012 – September 2014) which will lead to qualification as a Hong Kong or English lawyer.  At the end of a two-year training period the candidate may be offered a permanent position in Herbert Smith‘s Beijing or Shanghai office.

 

Who can Apply

 

You must have consistently outstanding academic achievements.  You should also be a dynamic individual with an outstanding extra-curricular record.  An excellent command of the English language (both written and spoken) is absolutely essential.

 

The scholarship is aimed at law students who wish to pursue a long term career with Herbert Smith.

 

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD DETAILS

 

The scholarship requires the successful student to commence the GDL at a recognised institution in the United Kingdom in September 2010 and commence the PCLL in Hong Kong or the LPC in England in September 2011.  After completing the PCLL/LPC the student must undertake a two year training contract at Herbert Smith London or Hong Kong .

 

The value of the award includes tuition fees and allowances for lodging, maintenance and books.  The award will also include an economy class air ticket to and from London at the beginning and at the end of the GDL.

Selection Process

 

All shortlisted candidates will be asked to attend an interview during November 2009.

 

The grant of the scholarship is subject to the successful candidate being accepted by a recognised institution (approved by Herbert Smith) to study the GDL and the PCLL/LPC.
